post-pandemic hiring boom. Vacancies have fallen, employers are being more cautious, and candidates are often finding that roles attract higher volumes of applications. The ONS reported that UK vacancies fell to 712,000 in April to June 2026, with 2.5 unemployed people per vacancy in March to May 2026.

For manufacturing employers, however, this does not mean that every role has suddenly become easy to fill. In fact, many critical technical and engineering positions remain stubbornly difficult. Particularly across science, engineering and manufacturing businesses in the South and South East of the UK.

Thanks for reading Senex's Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

This is the gap between the headline labour market and the specialist STEM labour market. There may be more people actively looking for work, but that does not mean there are more people with the right combination of technical knowledge, hands-on manufacturing experience, problem-solving ability and sector knowledge.

Manufacturing recruitment is not just about finding a volume of applicants

One of the most common misconceptions in recruitment is that a tougher job market automatically gives employers access to more candidates. For some generalist roles, that may be true. But for specialist manufacturing positions, the challenge is rarely a lack of CVs. It is a lack of relevant, available and suitable people.

Manufacturing businesses often need candidates who can do more than perform a defined task. They need people who understand production processes, quality requirements, continuous improvement, safety standards, equipment limitations, materials, documentation and customer deadlines. These skills are usually built through years of practical experience, not picked up quickly through short-term training.

This is why roles such as a Production Engineer can remain difficult to recruit for, even when the wider market appears to favour employers. A good Production Engineer may need experience with process improvement, Lean manufacturing, tooling, NPI, production support, root cause analysis and cross-functional work with design, quality and operations teams. That blend of skills is valuable, but it is also rare in the local South and South East Job Market.

Specialist Manufacturing Skills Are in Demand

From Production Engineering and Lean Manufacturing to Quality and Continuous Improvement, discover roles that value your experience.

View Jobs & Careers tips in Manufacturing

Why critical manufacturing roles are so difficult to fill

There are several reasons why manufacturing businesses continue to face recruitment challenges.

The skills gap is still very real

The UK engineering and manufacturing skills shortage has not disappeared. Research from Barclays and The Manufacturer found that 75% of manufacturers identified skills shortages as their biggest barrier to growth, while recruitment challenges and talent retention were also major concerns.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology also reported that 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit for key roles, with technical and specialist skills among the main pressure points.

For employers, this means there is often a mismatch between the people available in the market and the skills required to keep production running, improve efficiency or support growth.

Experienced engineers are in short supply

Many manufacturing businesses need people who can make an impact quickly. That often means hiring experienced engineers, managers, technicians or specialists who have already worked in similar environments.

The difficulty is that experienced candidates are often already employed. They may not be actively applying for roles, and they may need a compelling reason to move. Salary matters, but so do commute, flexibility, career progression, company stability, technology, management culture and the perceived quality of the working environment.

This is particularly relevant in the South and South East, where SME employers may be competing not only with other local manufacturers, but also with Blue-Chip aerospace, defence, electronics, medical technology, scientific instrumentation, energy, automotive supply chain and advanced engineering businesses.

Manufacturing roles are becoming more complex

Modern manufacturing is increasingly technical. Automation, digital systems, data, sustainability, quality standards and process optimisation are changing what employers need from their people.

The result is that many roles now require a broader skill set than they did ten years ago. A manufacturing business may no longer need someone who can simply “keep production moving”. It may need someone who can identify inefficiencies, support automation projects, analyse recurring defects, work with suppliers, improve yield and contribute to long-term operational improvements.

That raises the bar for recruitment.

Location still matters

Manufacturing recruitment is often more location-sensitive than office-based hiring. Many production, engineering and operations roles need to be site-based. That means the realistic candidate pool is limited by commuting distance.

In the South and South East, this can be a major factor. A strong candidate may be technically suitable, but if the journey is too long or the role requires a daily commute across congested routes, they may not engage. This is one reason why specialist local knowledge matters when recruiting for engineering and manufacturing roles.

Candidates are more selective than employers expect

Even in a tougher market, good candidates still have choices. Skilled engineers, production specialists and technical managers are often cautious about moving unless the opportunity is clearly better than their current role.

Candidates may ask:

Is the salary genuinely competitive?
Is the company investing in equipment, people and processes?
Is there a clear reason for the vacancy?
Will the role offer progression?
Is the management team stable?
Does the business have realistic expectations?
Will the commute work long term?

If employers cannot answer these questions confidently, they may struggle to secure the candidates they want.

What manufacturing businesses can do differently when recruiting

Recruiting critical manufacturing roles requires more than advertising a vacancy and waiting for the right person to apply.

Employers can improve results by:

Defining what is essential and what can be trained

Moving quickly when strong candidates are identified

Benchmarking salary and benefits against the real local market

Being clear about progression, training and investment

Selling the opportunity, not just listing responsibilities

Considering adjacent sector experience

Working with a specialist recruiter such as Senex Recruitment who understands the technical requirements and the local candidate market

For example, when recruiting a Production Engineer, it may be tempting to search only for candidates who have held the exact same job title in the same industry. But some of the strongest candidates may come from related manufacturing environments where they have solved similar production, process or quality problems. A recruiter can help you find these people through industry knowledge and personal experience, the human touch is still vital even in today’s automated environment.

The headline job market does not tell the whole story

The wider labour market may be more difficult for job seekers than it was a few years ago, but specialist manufacturing recruitment remains challenging. The issue is not simply whether people are looking for work. The issue is whether the right people exist in the right location, with the right skills, at the right salary level, and whether they are ready to move.

For manufacturing businesses in the South and South East, critical roles can still take time, insight and search and selection techniques to fill.

At Senex Recruitment, we specialise in science, engineering and manufacturing recruitment across the South and South East of the UK. We understand the technical detail behind the roles, the local talent market and the challenges employers face when recruiting skilled people for business-critical positions.

If your business is struggling to recruit for a specialist manufacturing, engineering or technical role, we can help you identify, attract and secure the right people.

Struggling to Find the Right Manufacturing and Engineering Talent? the UK are deciding how best to enter engineering and manufacturing.

Should they study for a university degree? Or build their career primarily through practical industry experience?

Thanks for reading Senex's Substack! There appears to be renewed government attention on technical education, vocational qualifications and apprenticeships, including recent comments from the new UK Prime Minister about earlier access to technical education and support for apprenticeships.

So, we asked our LinkedIn community:

Which educational or training pathway do you believe develops the strongest engineering and manufacturing talent?

The results were:

Degree Apprenticeship / HNC: 42%

Apprenticeship: 28%

University Degree / Master’s and above: 16%

Industry Experience Only: 14%

The result does not mean one route has “won”. The more useful conclusion is that engineering professionals appear to place particularly high value on pathways that combine structured learning with practical workplace experience.

Work-based learning received the strongest support

Degree Apprenticeships and HNC routes attracted the largest individual share of the vote at 42%.

When combined with the 28% who selected a traditional apprenticeship, 70% of respondents favoured a pathway with a substantial work-based learning component.

That is a strong endorsement of the “earn while you learn” model, particularly at a time when the cost of a traditional university route is an important consideration for many people.

Engineering and manufacturing are applied disciplines. Technical knowledge matters, but employers also need people who can use that knowledge safely, accurately and commercially.

Working alongside experienced colleagues helps learners understand production pressures, quality requirements, maintenance schedules, customer expectations and the practical consequences of engineering decisions.

The popularity of degree apprenticeships and HNC routes may therefore reflect their ability to bring together two important elements:

Recognised academic or technical study

Continuous application in a real working environment

A degree apprenticeship allows someone to work towards an undergraduate or master’s-level qualification while employed. UCAS identifies benefits including a paid-for degree, a salary, practical experience and an early start in the workplace. It also notes the challenges, including the demanding balance between work and study and strong competition for available places.

You can read more here:

Degree Apprenticeships Explained by UCAS

A new focus on technical education and apprenticeships?

The timing of our poll is particularly interesting following comments made this week by the new UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.

In a LinkedIn post reviewing the government’s first fortnight, he highlighted plans to give 14-year-olds earlier access to technical education, skills training and connections with employers. He also referred to investment in the UK’s nuclear deterrent that is expected to support 22,000 apprenticeships.

It is too early to know what these announcements will deliver, but they do appear to signal a renewed political focus on technical and vocational education, apprenticeships and employment-based learning.

That direction reflects the central finding of our poll: engineering professionals place considerable value on development that connects formal education with practical experience.

For too long, technical and vocational routes have sometimes been presented as secondary to university. A stronger focus on apprenticeships, HNCs, degree apprenticeships and technical qualifications could help challenge that perception.

However, the real test will be delivery.

The quality of training, employer participation, mentoring, recognised qualifications and progression opportunities will matter just as much as the number of apprenticeships announced.

Every route has value

Traditional apprenticeships received 28% of the vote. A strong engineering apprenticeship can develop practical competence, recognised qualifications and a detailed understanding of an employer’s equipment, processes and standards.

EngineeringUK reported that engineering and technology subjects accounted for 29% of apprenticeship starts in England during 2024/25, with starts increasing by 5% compared with the previous year.

View EngineeringUK’s apprenticeship data

University degrees and postgraduate qualifications received 16% of the vote. That should not be interpreted as evidence that degrees have lost their value.

University education provides the mathematical, scientific and analytical foundations required for fields such as advanced design, research, simulation, software, electronics, materials science and energy systems.

Graduates can strengthen their employment prospects by combining academic study with industrial placements, internships, employer projects and practical technical experience.

Industry experience alone received 14%. Although this was the smallest share, practical experience remains central to engineering credibility.

Experience develops fault-finding ability, commercial judgement, safety awareness and an understanding of how equipment and processes behave over time.

The limitation is that workplace development can depend heavily on the employer, manager or environment. Technical courses, HNC or HND study, professional registration and recognised certifications can help experienced professionals formalise their knowledge and demonstrate transferable competence.

What does the poll really tell us?

Three conclusions stand out.

First, applied learning matters.
With 70% choosing either an apprenticeship or Degree Apprenticeship / HNC route, respondents strongly supported learning alongside employment.

Second, formal education and training still matter.
When the university, apprenticeship and Degree Apprenticeship / HNC categories are combined, 86% selected a route involving a recognised programme of learning.

Third, the strongest talent is likely to emerge from a combination of knowledge and experience.
Qualifications provide technical foundations and recognised standards. Experience develops judgement, confidence and practical competence. Mentoring transfers knowledge that cannot always be found in a textbook.

What should employers take from the results?

Employers should avoid treating a degree, apprenticeship or a specific number of years’ experience as an automatic requirement.

Instead, recruitment should focus on the capabilities genuinely needed for the role, including:

Technical competence

Practical problem-solving

Safety and quality awareness

Communication and teamwork

Commercial understanding

Curiosity and willingness to learn

The ability to apply knowledge in practice

The strongest engineering teams often include a balance of people from different educational and professional backgrounds.

Graduates may contribute advanced analytical knowledge. Apprentices can bring strong operational understanding. Experienced professionals provide judgement and context. Degree apprentices can connect academic concepts with workplace application.

The objective should not be to prove that one route is superior.

It should be to create teams where these different strengths complement one another.

Final thoughts

Our LinkedIn poll placed Degree Apprenticeship / HNC routes first, followed by apprenticeships, university education and industry experience alone.

The larger conclusion is more important than the ranking:

Engineering and manufacturing talent appears to be strongest when structured learning and practical workplace experience reinforce each other.

This week’s political announcements add a timely dimension to the discussion. Earlier technical education, stronger employer connections and support for apprenticeships could represent a welcome change in direction.

For students and career changers, the message is encouraging. There is more than one credible route into engineering and manufacturing.

For employers, the challenge is to recognise potential across all those routes and provide the training, mentoring and opportunities needed to turn that potential into long-term capability.

How Senex Recruitment can help

At Senex Recruitment, we support candidates and employers across science, engineering, manufacturing and technology.

Whether your background is academic, vocational, practical or a combination of all three, what matters is how your knowledge, experience and potential align with the opportunity ahead.

You can view our latest roles here:

Search our latest science, engineering, manufacturing and technology jobs

If you are planning your next career move, you can also register your CV with us:

Send Senex your CV

And if you would like career advice or want to discuss your next move, please contact us here:

Contact Senex Recruitment

About the author

Kevin McHugh is the Director and Founder of Senex Recruitment, specialising in science, engineering and manufacturing recruitment.

He is committed to a quality-first approach, matching candidates and employers with precision, professionalism and respect across the South East and wider UK.

Meet Kevin McHugh

What do you think?

Which route did you take into engineering or manufacturing?

Did you gain most from a degree, an apprenticeship, an HNC, industry experience, or a combination of routes?

I would welcome your thoughts in the comments.

Keep your science, engineering and manufacturing career up to date

Subscribe to Senex Recruitment on Substack for regular career advice, industry insight, recruitment trends and practical guidance to support your next career move.

Subscribe on Substack

Thanks for reading Senex's Substack! Some of the UK’s leading employers are based in specialist industrial clusters such as the Golden Triangle (Oxford, London to Cambridge), technology or science parks, research hubs, and manufacturing centres that may require relocation.

Before accepting a role that involves moving home, it’s worth considering more than just the salary. Commute times, housing costs, family commitments, and long-term career opportunities can all have a significant impact on whether a move is ultimately successful.

This practical checklist will help you assess the key factors before, during, and after relocating for work.

Why Relocation Can Be Worth Considering

Many professionals limit their career options by searching only within commuting distance of their current home.

Expanding your search area can unlock:

Higher salaries

Faster career progression

Access to specialist industries

Larger employers

Leadership opportunities

Exposure to cutting-edge technologies

For engineers, scientists, quality professionals, manufacturing managers, and technical leaders, relocation can often provide career opportunities that simply don’t exist locally.

The key to successfully relocating is ensuring that the overall package works for your lifestyle as well as your career ambitions.

Remember being “open to relocation” is very different to “actively relocating” so lets consider the steps.

Relocating and ready to Start your Job Search?

Browse selected Science, Engineering and Manufacturing roles from Senex Recruitment

Search Senex Recruitment’s Current Jobs

1. Research the Local Property Market

Before accepting an offer, investigate housing costs thoroughly.

A salary increase may appear attractive on paper but could be offset by significantly higher living expenses.

Questions to consider:

What are average house prices in the area?

How much is monthly rent?

Are there suitable schools nearby?

What are local council tax rates?

Is the area growing economically?

Useful comparisons include:

Current mortgage or rent versus projected costs

Property size and quality

Future resale potential

Local amenities

Many manufacturing and engineering employers are located in areas where property costs are substantially lower than major cities, potentially increasing your disposable income despite similar salaries.

Use online property sales website such as Rightmove to gauge the local market. Speak to Estate agents, but be cautious as to whether they may exploit you lack of market knowledge to sell/rent property in a location someone with local market knowledge may not live.

Speak to the employees of the company you are looking to go to, or local residents to get a feel of the location. Most people will be happy to help.

Your recruiter may also have some local knowledge, if they are based close to the business, so do ask.

2. Understand the Real Commute

When assessing a new role, don’t just calculate the distance. Calculate the daily realities of commuting:

Traffic patterns

Shift start times

Public transport availability

Parking

Fuel costs

Seasonal travel conditions

School / Child care drop off and opening times

This is particularly important in manufacturing environments where shifts may begin early in the morning or operate on rotating schedules.

A role that’s only 20 miles away may involve an hour’s travel during peak periods.

We always recommend making a test journey before committing to relocation.

3. Check the Cost of Living

Salary should never be assessed in isolation.

Compare:

Housing costs

Utility and council tax costs

Childcare

Transport

Fuel

Food costs

Leisure activities

A £5,000 salary increase may not improve your finances if living costs rise by a similar amount.

Conversely, relocating to an area with lower housing or travel costs could significantly improve your standard of living even without a major pay increase.

4. Consider Family Impacts

Relocation decisions rarely affect only one person.

If you have a partner, children, or caring responsibilities, involve them early in the decision-making process.

Key considerations include:

Partner Employment

Can your partner find suitable work locally? Will they be able to pursue the career they are looking for, this may also be more than a short term choice.

Schools

Are local schools appropriate for your children’s needs?

Healthcare Access

What local healthcare facilities are available?

Support Networks

How far will you be from family and friends?

Lifestyle Changes

Will the new location offer the lifestyle you want?

A role may be professionally exciting but difficult to sustain if family needs aren’t properly considered.

5. Ask About Relocation Support

Many engineering, scientific, and manufacturing employers offer relocation assistance, particularly when recruiting hard-to-find skills.

Potential relocation benefits may include:

Lump sum relocation payments

Temporary accommodation

Hotel costs

House-hunting trips

Legal fee contributions

Removal expenses

Rental support

Travel reimbursement

Always ask what support is available before accepting an offer.

Relocation policies vary considerably between employers.

6. Evaluate Long-Term Career Opportunities

A relocation should ideally improve both your immediate situation and your future prospects.

Ask yourself:

Does this employer invest in training and development?

Are there promotion opportunities that fit my career goals?

Is the company growing or able to offer employment stability?

Will you gain valuable experience?

Will this role strengthen your CV?

Moving home can be disruptive, so it’s worth ensuring the role aligns with your longer-term career objectives and offer employment security.

7. Review the Employment Package Carefully

Candidates often focus heavily on salary while overlooking the rest of the package.

Review:

Annual bonus schemes

Pension contributions

Private healthcare

Professional memberships

Flexible/hybrid working options

Training

Share schemes

Additional leave

Car / Car Allowance

Sometimes a strong benefits package can significantly outweigh a small salary difference.

8. Visit the Area Before You Commit

If possible, spend time in the local area before accepting the role.

Consider:

Local amenities

Transport links

Restaurants and shops

Recreation facilities

Community atmosphere

Potential housing locations

A weekend visit can provide valuable insight that online research often misses. Talk to the locals and get an understanding of what the area is like.

9. Create a Relocation Timeline

Once you’ve accepted an offer, planning becomes essential.

Consider creating a checklist covering:

Before Resignation

Confirm employment contract

Review relocation support

Finalise housing plans and timings

During Notice Period

Arrange removals

Notify utilities / council

Update addresses

Plan school transfers

Before Starting

Familiarise yourself with the commute

Review induction information

Research the company so you can hit the ground running in your new role

First Month(s)

Build local networks

Explore and enjoy the area

Establish routines

Work to a 90 day plan to ensure you settle into your new job

A structured approach helps reduce stress during the transition.

Final Thoughts on Relocation for a New Job

Relocating for an engineering, science, or manufacturing role can be an excellent investment in your career. It may provide access to higher salaries, more advanced projects, stronger employers, and greater opportunities for progression.

However, successful relocation goes beyond simply accepting a new position. Taking time to evaluate housing, commuting, family considerations, living costs, and long-term career prospects will help ensure your move delivers the benefits you’re looking for.

If you’re considering a relocation as part of your next career move, speak with your recruiter early in the process.
